The national bereavement support group “Compassionate Friends” unites friends and family around the globe each year in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and grandchildren who left too soon.

We would like to invite all of you in the State College community who mourn the loss of a child to gather in front of Atherton Hall, College Avenue, in State College on Sunday, December 14, at 7 p.m. We will join thousands of candle lighting events across the globe in remembrance of children who have died, but will never be forgotten.

When our sweet Mack died suddenly on New Year’s Eve 2012 we became aware of silent army of bereaved parents all around us. There are many myths in our culture surrounding the grieving process, especially the notion that we ever “get over” the death of a beloved child and get “back to normal.” There is no such thing.

We live, but newly. With live with the loss of those we love. We want to remember them and we want the world to remember that they were here.

So, for those who grieve, please join us in front of Atherton Hall for a short lighting ceremony to celebrate the love and life of your loved one. Bring a photo of your loved one and bundle up! We will have some music and a few words, give each family an opportunity to speak the name of their loved one and light a candle…so that their lights may always shine!
