Dean Brady – thanks very much for your kind and inspirational remarks to the State College and Penn State soccer communities. Here — in honor and in memory of Mack, and with love and support from all of us who are now Mack’s perpetual teammates — is a Celtic soccer song by Irish poet Gabriel Fitzmaurice:
The Game of Your Life
Whatever way it’s kicked out, face the ball!
While wingers await delivery in space,
Centrefield must rise above the maul
And safely field, taking thought to place
The ball of fortune with the chosen one
And will him on to make the greatest use
Of what he’s given as he solos on;
Centrefield’s involved as play ensures.
For now’s the time when great men must redeem
The story of the game from death, defeat:
The game of life’s the story of a team
Who cannot rest until their task’s complete
To take the cup, the cup that cannot pass
And raise it up in glory for the mass.
Dan
Thank you so very much! What a wonderful and moving poem I will share this widely.
We had the great joy of seeing the Celtics play not once, but twice, both last summer. Once was in Amsterdam against Ajax. Mack and I took the train out to the stadium with a train full of …*ahem*…enthusiastic Glaswegians. Later in the summer, we saw them play Real Madrid (Mack’s hero was Iker Casillas) in Philadelphia with his Cetlic SC teammates.
Thank you again for sharing this.
